I am thinking about getting one and I was wondering if there are preferred years or distinguishing features that I could search for among the many offerings on eBay Im also curious how it compares, broadly speaking, to the standard Bach Strad 37 I have a Strad but despite trying many copies of the Strad when I bought it to get the best feeling horn I could find, I feel like my trumpet is clearly inferior to my other horns. I have a Couesnon flugel from the 50s and a 60s King cornet which is nothing special on paper but plays like a dream compared to my trumpet. Maybe old instruments are just where its at for me. You can tell by the closed pinky ring instead of the C shape they are on most horns. Also the leadpipe to bell braces are Z-shaped rather than straight across. I have a 57 and it is fantastic Like they said, it has a closed pinky ring and Z braces. They hold up really well, sound fantastic, and are incredibly smooth. ![]() They are pretty cheap and so you wont be taking a great risk in buying one. Yeah its a decent student horn, but its still a student horn. I sincerely doubt youre going to like it better than a Strad. Of course, everything is personal, but if youre expanding your search that far, theres tons more to consider too. Its the best student horn Ive played, but it is still a student-level horn. I bought one on craigslist for less than 100 intending on using it as the canvas for my budding metalwork skills, but the tone, blow and valve action have stolen quite a bit of playing time from my pro horns. I bought it from a member of the presidents own marine band and he had it kept in really nice shape and added a 1st valve slide. I have no clue how this is pertinent to the ambassador, or your question but I dunno, it came to mind. ![]() Its generally difficult to harmonize cornet with people playing trumpet. I sometimes pick it over the Xeno when Im unamplified and I want a really lively sound (and being in tune isnt a huge consideration ie. My stock answer for anybody who comes to me and says my kid is in 5th grade and wants to play trumpet - what should I get -- is an old Olds Ambassador cornet. And if he quits at the end of the school year you can sell it for more than you bought it for. SN Month Year 073000 Mar.
